What is a Crane Barge?

Deck Crane Barge

CRANE BARGES

As we mentioned before on our blog post Types of Barges (which contains very useful information) it was explained superficially. Now you can find detailed information about Crane Barges or Crane Vessels.

As the name suggests, a crane ship is that type of sea-going vessel that has a crane attached to it. A crane vessel is of great relevance when it comes to the facet of creating structures in the high seas. It is just because of such vessels that numerous important buildings are accomplished in trickier parts of the seas and oceans.

The duty, as well as the activity of a crane ship, is similar to the cranes that are used in daily construction activities. The only difference is the reality that the crane barge is utilized in the seas whilst the other on the ground.

The making of the crane vessel has actually changed in the 800-hundred years of its origin. The initial crane ship was manufactured in the 14th century and ever since the technology has actually assisted generations and generations of individuals. In today’s times, along with the basic ship that has a single crane attached to it, ‘Semi-Submersible Vessels’ and the ‘Sheerlegs.’ are the common types of the crane barges.

Typical Crane Vessels: These types of marine cranes are more typically recognized around. They were the ones that were first presented in the 14th century, as pointed out over. These cranes can be made use of to transport as well as lift around 2,500 tons. Additionally, one more significant feature is that it is self-propelled, which implies, the crane can be transferred to the location where the thing to be lifted is located.

Semi-Submersible Crane Barges: These types of cranes provide a lot of security to the devices that is being lugged. As the name goes, semi-submersible cranes submerge partly right into the water to give the weight put on top of them the equilibrium required. This equilibrium offered ensures that the item carried does not topple right into the water. The weight lifting capability of such semi-submersible cranes differs from one naval vessel to an additional. Nonetheless, the heaviest restriction that such semi-submersibles can carry includes around 15,000 tonnes.

What is a Deck Barge?

DECK BARGES

As we mentioned before on our blog post Types of Barges (which contains very useful information) it was explained superficially. Now you can find detailed information about Deck Barges.

Also called or known as a flat deck barge. Deck barges can vary in size and overall design depending on what they are used for, and some include rake decks. Those with rake decks have curved bows that allow for less resistance when being pushed, which can make transporting and shipping items on the deck easier. Some of the items commonly transported/stored on deck barges include crane, excavators, pipe, piling, rock, fabricated structures, and certain kinds of liquid cargo. Occasionally, these types of barges are utilized as work platforms, allowing offshore projects to conveniently extend beyond land. Deck barges are common in marine construction, dredging, bridge construction, bulkhead construction, and in the offshore gas and oil industry. A deck barge’s deck can accommodate large objects such as sections of bridges in addition to bulk materials, machinery, and equipment.

Made of steel and engineered to withstand the elements, it is common to find deck barges still in use over the course of several decades. Deck barges are usually between 20 and 120 meters in length and between 15 and 30 meters wide. They can support several hundred tons of weight. The various types of deck barges include inland deck barges, rock/gravel deck barges, deck barges with combing walls, self-propelled deck barges, deck barges with bin walls, classed deck barges that have to meet certain specifications. Most deck barges are not self-propelled, and those that are self-propelled are often higher in price.

Deck barges can cope with an enormous amount of damage and unbelievably still survive.

Depending on the size, age, and overall specs of a deck barge, this type of equipment is usually valued between $100,000 and $4,000,000. Before mentioned, deck barges commonly last several decades or more. It is common to find deck barges from the 1950s still in use due to their durability. Because of this, buying used deck barges is a great alternative for many companies on a budget. For temporary use, some companies decide to charter rather than outright purchase deck barges.

Different Types of Barges

inland barge - barge for sale

INLAND BARGES

Inland barges comprise the majority of barges operating on the inland waters. These types of barges are designed to operate on canals, rivers, bays, and inland lakes. Inland barges’ aim is providing the most economical mode of transportation for oversized, large volume, or high-density cargos.

Different sizes of barges and configurations assist in the transportation of specific materials and project execution. Barges are an inbuilt part of the development of the various industries and communities that depend on the waterways.

Deck Cargo Barge for Rent

DECK BARGES

This type of barge is designed to carry cargo on its deck and differ in size and structural design, depending on its aimed use. Deck cargos include such as piling, pipe, fabricated structures, heavy equipment, rock, palletized material, or even horses, cattle, and rocket boosters. In some cases, certain liquid cargos may be carried in the interior watertight sections. Deck barges are also used as work platforms for machinery and workes, in this way serving as an extension of the land. Some of the deck barges may have raised rake decks. Here is the very good DECK BARGE sample named SEMA-1 which belongs to our company.

Deck Crane Barge

SPUD AND CRANE BARGES

Spud barges are specially built to support a working crane or an excavator. Spud barges typically have a boxed stern to ensure maximum flotation while operating a crane. The extra reinforced keel is generally provided under the crane working area by use of additional bulkheads, internal trusses, or deck frames. Wooden crane mats help distribution the concentrated load and providing traction for the crane. Spud barges can also be used for general cargo transportation or as a work platform. The operation of the spuds is operated by a crane placed aboard the barge or by a spud-winch that may be installed. Another option is embarking a crawler crane on to Deck Barge like the flattop deck barge SEMA-1, mooring is completed by 4 point mooring system to provide the stable working condition.

Hopper Barge

HOPPER BARGES

Hopper barges usually have double-hull construction, wherein the sides and bottom of the cargo hold are separated from the hull by void spaces. These types of barges are designed for efficient transport of commodities in bulk, such as coal, grain, ore, sugar, steel, timber products, aggregates, and numerous other cargos.

Hopper barges have a single raked, double-raked, or boxed hull configuration. The hoppers can be covered or open. Covers provide protection of cargos from the external factors. Covers may be installed as roll-top (telescoping), or lift-off (stacking) type.

Hopper Barges have also subtypes like split hopper barge and bottom door hopper barge with gear or gearless.

USE OF BARGES

• The use of barges has witnessed a severe decline but not complete extinction. Barges can successfully transport items in bulk with lower transportation costs than other modes of transportation. Another main reason for their usage is that these are available in different sizes (like with smaller capacities of 1400 tons to even larger of 2700 tons) and can be employed as per the need for goods to be transported.

• For traveling in calm water, either upstream or downstream, self-propelled barges can be used which can propel on their own and facilitates successful transportation of any sort of cargo (either dry or liquid).

• In most of the cases, the design of a barge is carried out for a specific water body and that barge has to serve in only that water body throughout its life. In all cases, if that barge is used to serve in any other water body with a high flow rate or to be operated for an upstream route, then this barge can voyage only with tugged or assisted by a tug boat.

• Royal Barges can be used for the celebration of certain occasions by the royal family. These barges are still owned by monarchs of the United Kingdom and provide a luxurious destination celebration of an event.

• Barges are mostly used for the transportation of coal and grain on coastal waters. These barges help to save a huge sum in transportation against other transportation methods.

• The capacity of the goods to be transported can be enlarged considerably when it’s transported by barges because in a single voyage one or more barges could be towed by the tug boat and which makes transportation more economically.

Canakkale 1915 Bridge https://sema-marine.com/en/1915-canakkale-bridge/ Thu, 16 Jul 2020 00:22:09 +0000 https://sema-marine.com/en/?p=1753

Canakkale 1915 Bridge

Canakkale 1915 Bridge is the longest mid-span suspension bridge in the world. The bridge is located between Gallipoli in Europe and Lapseki in Asia.

The planned total length of the bridge is 3563 meters and with the viaducts, length reaches 4608 meters. Span distance of the 1915 Canakkale Bridge is 2023 meters. The total height of the towers is 318meters. The Bridge is the center-piece segment of the 324-km-long Kınalı-Tekirdağ-Çanakkale-Savaştepe Motorway Project.

Some symbolic figures are related to the bridge. The name “1915” and therefore the groundbreaking date “March 18” are associated with the Turkish Naval Victory on March 18, 1915, during the naval operations within the Gallipoli Campaign. The length of the bridge’s main span with “2,023” meters refers to the centennial of the Turkish Republic in 2023.

Flattop Deck Cargo Barge Sema-1 was hired by Unitek Insaat, which is a subcontractor of bridge contractor consortium DLSY (Daelim – Limak – SK E&C – Yapi Merkezi), for piling works of towers foundations. 600 tons capacity crawler crane was embarked on Deck Barge Sema-1 and the project was completed successfully.

We successfully completed the charter job at Canakkale 1915 Bridge project with our deck barge equipment Sema-1 as the main piling barge for the foundation of bridge towers. 600 tons capacity crawler crane was embarked on Sema-1.
